Cats and Earthquakes

There is a great question about cats and earthquakes. Can they predict them cant they not? Some people say yes, they are sensitive to vibrations of the earth and don't like it so they make a noise or go and hide. Others say it is because, cats have an advance warning system and they respond to changes in static electricity. But we don't know which if any of those hypothosis are correct.

Recently in where my family and I live (in Southern California) we had a pretty big earthquake. Where we live it is quite wierd, we can acctually hear the earthquake coming before it hits. Just a low rumbling, but still we know that one is coming.

Anywho my mom heard it first while we were eating lunch. She looked over at me, but I didn't hear anything and neither did the kittys. A few seconds later she said "I think we are having an earthquake." At that very instant I heard it. And what do you think the kittys were doing? SLEEPING!! There ears weren't even flicking. Then when it hit our house (it lasted for about 5 whole seconds) the cats jumped down from the couch started meowing, trying to be heard over over the noise. Even after it passed our house we could still hear it for another full 5 seconds more. The cats tails were huge and they were bumping into the walls blindly and meowing all the while, but then as soon as it was over they just ate some food, said hi to the litter box and went back to sleep.

So now I don't know about cats and earthquakes. Can they really sense them or is that just a fable? Then how do you explain the other stories about cats and earthquakes? Or maybe my cats, (as smart as I think they are) just don't have that earthquake-sensing-capability.

"You will always be lucky if you know how to make friends with strange cats."

Hey~ Hmm I always thought that all animals had ways of knowing an earthquake even before they struck but maybe cats have a better sense of knowing that ones coming better than any other animal!

Did you ever think that the reason your cats didn't move or respond to the oncoming earthquake, was, because they feel very secure in your home and with your family. They probably reacted after, because the family reacted. They sound like they are part of the family.
